LIONS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT, DOWN TREVECCA 9-8

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama built a 6-3 lead early and held off a late Trevecca run to down the Trojans 9-8. It was the fifth straight win for the Lions.

With the win, UNA is now 25-20 while Trevecca falls to 25-16.

UNA was out-hit 19 to 15 in the game that saw a combined 11 different pitchers take the mound.

Trevecca scored three runs in the top of the first inning off UNA starter Shawn Smirnoff but the Lions countered with a four-run second inning to take the lead for good. Peyton Sockwell, Kyle Crabtree, Davis Elliott and Dylan Calhoun all drove in runs in the inning.

The Lions then added two more runs in the third on an RBI–double by Kyle Hubbuch and a Mitchell Lovell RBI-single.

Trevecca scored a run in the fourth and forced Smirnoff from the game in the fifth but Austin Carpenter came on to stop the threat. The Trojans got a run in the sixth off Carpenter to make it 6-5 but the Lions rebounded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Calhoun, Heath Wood and Kevin Hall all drove in runs to push the UNA lead to 9-5. Trevecca scored two more runs off Carpenter in the seventh to make it 9-7 before Bradley Bailey came on to stop the scoring.

With UNA leading 9-7, Blake Talley came on to close the game but gave up a run and Trevecca loaded the bases with two outs before Kyle Hubbuch made a difficult stop on a bouncing ball behind third base and beat the Trojans' Micah Blount to the bag to end the game.

Carpenter (3-1) got the win for UNA in one and two-thirds innings of relief. He allowed three runs on six hits. Blake Talley earned his fifth save in one inning of work.

Calhoun led UNA with four hits and has now recorded 14 hits in UNA's last four games.
