LIONS SPLIT FINAL DAY OF GSC/SSC CROSSOVER

HOOVER – After knocking of Barry earlier in the day, the University of North Alabama volleyball team came up short in a five-set showdown to finish the GSC/SSC Crossover with a 2-1 record. UNA swept the Bucs 25-20, 25-14, 25-20 before coming up short 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 12-15 in the last match of the event.
 
Lexie Bradley had 35 kills on the day. Ashtyn Kapovich added 42 digs. The total gives her 424 digs on the year and puts her over the 2,000 mark for her career with 2,013. UNA is now 18-5 on the season.
 
In the nightcap, the two teams traded victories before Florida Southern held on for the late win. Bradley had 26 kills while Jessica Austin totaled 17 kills for the Lions. Christian Ellwanger added 13 kills and 10 digs for North Alabama while Jayden Davila-McClary had 61 assists.
 
Defensively, Kapovich totaled 26 digs. She surpassed the 2,000 mark early in the third set. Bradley added 15 digs while Ava Carnley also reached double figures with 13 digs for the Lions.
 
Against Barry, Genny Cruz led all players with a match-high 11 kills. The sophomore from Morrison, Colo., hit .348 for the match and added a dig in the 25-20, 25-14, 25-20 win.
 
The first set featured 11 ties before North Alabama pulled away late for the 25-20 victory. The Lions led from wire to wire in the second set. Cruz had six kills in the frame as UNA moved ahead 2-0 in the match.
 
Austin had four of her 10 kills in the final set at the Lions completed the sweep. Barry (8-5) was held to a -.033 hitting percentage in the game.
 
Davila-McClary had 34 assists while Lexie Bradley added 10 digs and five service aces for the Lions. Kapovich led all players a match-high 16 digs.
 
UNA will return to Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. showdown at Montevallo
