FLORENCE, Ala. -- After winning the opening game 11-0, the University of North Alabama held an 8-1 lead in the nightcap before Bellarmine rallied for a 12-10 win to split the double-header at Mike Lane Field.
With the split, UNA is now 3-3 overall, while Bellarmine is 1-2.
UNA dominated the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning and adding a single run in the fourth, six in the fifth and three in the eighth. Bellarmine was held to just five hits by North Alabama pitchers
Devan Traglia and
Shane Priest. Traglia (1-0) got the win, pitching seven complete innings and allowing no runs on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Priest pitched the final two innings and allowed a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.
Logan Carter led UNA at the plate with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Kyle Hubbuch scored twice and drove in two runs with his third homer of the season in the eighth inning.
The Lions had 13 hits in the game.
North Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap before the Knights tied it at 1-1 in the second. The Lions then used seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an 8-1 lead. The runs came on the combination of four hits, four bases on balls, one hit batter and one error. Hubbuch had a two-run single in the inning.
Bellarmine rallied for three runs in the third and five in the fourth inning to take a 9-8 lead.
UNA quickly tied it in the bottom of the frame on a double by Carter and an RBI single from Hubbuch.
But the Knights would add two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 12-9 advantage.
North Alabama loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and TJ Lockett drove in a run to make it 12-10. Bellarmine reliever Zac Wiley then sctruckout
Aaron Hobbs to end the threat.
Bradley Bailey started for UNA and allowed six runs on nine hits in three innings of work with one walk and five strikeouts.
Lane Wallace (0-2) took the loss, pitching two and a third innings of relief and allowing six runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Four of Bellarmine's runs off Wallace were unearned.
Channing Wall pitched the final one and two-thirds innings, giving up two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Carter was three-for-three in the loss with one scored and three runs batted in. Hubbuch, Lockett and
Davis Elliott added two hits each.
North Alabama hosts LeMoyne-Owen Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mike Lane Field.
