SOFTBALL LIONS SPLIT GSC OPENER AT WEST GEORGIA

CARROLLTON, Ga., – After dropping a 2-0 decision to open Gulf South Conference play at West Georgia on Saturday, the University of North Alabama softball team held on to win the second game 11-9 to earn a split on the day. UNA is now 9-5 overall and 1-1 in GSC play. The two teams will play a rubber match at 1 p.m. (Eastern) on Sunday.

In the opener, West Georgia's Kathryn Woody tossed the complete-game shutout to get the win. UNA was held to four hits, including doubles by Hannah Shollenberger and Bailey Nelson. The Lions, however, could never get a runner past second base.

UWG (6-5 overall, 1-1 GSC) got its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wolves got four of their five hits in the frame to push two runs across the plate.

Hillary Carpenter took the loss in the circle. She allowed two runs off five hits with three strikeouts. At the plate Mackenzie Roberts was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

After struggling to score in the opener, the UNA bats came alive in the second game. The Lions scored 11 runs off 18 hits, but had to hold off a late UWG rally to secure the win.

North Alabama took a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the home team scored four times to push the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Lions got a two-run single by Sydney Sanders to reclaim the lead. Carpenter retired three of four batters faced in the bottom of the inning to get the win in relief and improve to 4-3 on the year.

UNA scored early and often throughout the contest. The Lions opened the game with three straight singles, including an RBI by Anna Gayle Norris. An RBI-ground out by Shelby Woodard then gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.

After Roberts led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field, UWG answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame. Three straight doubles highlighted a four-run fourth inning for North Alabama. Sabrina Gillium (one RBI), Norris (two RBI) and Woodard (one RBI) gave UNA a 7-1 lead.

The Wolves, however, would not quit. West Georgia plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Each team then scored a single run in the sixth inning to give UNA an 8-5 lead heading into the seventh. Reagan Tittle drove in the run for the Lions with a double to left center.

Katie Eakes homered for UNA in the top of the seventh. The run gave the Lions the 9-5 lead and proved to be just enough insurance before the home team rallied. UWG scored four runs off five hits in the inning, stranding the potential winning run at second base.

Three different UNA pitchers saw action in the circle. Starter Raven Cole worked the first five innings, holding the Wolves to a run on four hits in the first four frames. West Georgia opened the fifth inning with three straight hits, including a three-run home run.

Marissa Honeycutt worked 1.2 innings, allowing five runs off six hits before Carpenter came on in the bottom of the seventh with UNA nursing a 9-8 lead. She gave up a game-tying double before recording the final out of the inning.

At the plate, Sanders was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Gilliam was also 3-for-3 with an RBI while Norris drove in three runs on a 3-for-5 showing. Woodard and Nelson also added two hits each.
