VOLLEYBALL SPLITS OPENING DAY AT UWF TOURNEY

PENSACOLA, Fla., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened the 2017 season by splitting a pair of matches at the UWF Hampton Inn-vitational in Pensacola, giving head coach Stephanie Radecki her 300th victory at the school. The Lions (1-1) lost a 3-1 decision to No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State before holding off Southern Indiana 3-2 to earn the split on the day.
 
"I have been truly fortunate to work with some great coaches and have coached some truly talented and dedicated players at UNA," said Radecki, who with 300-147 at the school. "They have put me in the position to find success and represent the university well. I'm honored to be a part of 300 wins at UNA and am thankful for all of those who helped me accomplish that."
 
In the opener, second-ranked Southwest Minnesota State recorded 10 team blocks at hit .263 for the match in the 25-21, 29-31, 25-19, 25-22 victory. Taylor Reiss had 26 kills to lead the Mustangs.
 
Lexie Bradley and Christina Ellwanger paced UNA with 15 kills each. Ashtyn Kapovich also started the season strong with 30 digs.
 
SMSU opened the match with a 5-0 run in the opening set before the Lions settled in. UNA rallied to tie the score at 10-10 and 20-20 before the Mustangs closed with a 5-1 run.
 
The second game featured 10 set points, including nine by North Alabama. The Lions led 24-21 before a late SMSU rally forced extra points. A 5-1 run gave the Mustangs a 26-25 lead and a set point of their own before a kill by Bradley evened the score again. With the score tied at 29-29, the Lions got the win on an attack error against SMSU followed by a block from Bradley and Jayden Davila-McClary to end the set.
 
Trailing 7-4 in the third set, the Mustangs used an 8-2 run to grab the lead. Southwest Minnesota maintained the advantage the rest of the way, getting a service ace to end the set and grab a 2-1 overall lead in the match.
 
SMSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final set before the Lions responded. UNA led 18-16 and 20-19 but could not close. Taylor got seven kills, including the game-winner in the final frame to lead the way.
 
Jessica Austin added a .281 hitting percentage and also reached double-figures in kills with 13 for North Alabama. Davila-McClary added12 digs to go with her 46 assists. Ava Carnley also reached double figures in digs with 12 for the Lions.
 
In the second match, UNA won 25-19 and 25-20 to build and early lead. Southern Indiana, however, rallied. After consecutive 25-22 wins by the Eagles tied the match, USI grabbed a 10-6 lead in the final set. The Lions took advantage of three errors to put together a 5-1 run to tie the score and prompt a USI timeout.
 
North Alabama extended the lead to 13-11 before the Eagles fought off a set point and tied the game at 14-14. Back-to-back kills by Bradley then ended the frame.
 
Bradley finished with a career-high 26 kills. Austin hit .467 for the match and finished with 18 kills. Ana Gabriela Pacheco rounded out the top UNA hitters with 11 kills while Davila-McClary had 61 assists.
 
Defensively, Kapovich turned in 28 digs while Christina Ellwanger added 11 digs in the set.
 
"Overall, we had a good day," added Radecki. "We played two very strong teams and showed some toughness. We definitely need to improve but it is still early in the season."
 
UNA will wrap up play at the event on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. match against No. 11 Wheeling Jesuit and a 5 p.m. match against South Carolina-Aiken.
