LIONS SWEEP HAWKS 8-6 AND 16-3

FLORENCE, Ala. -- Brandt Holland had six hits and Kyle Hubbuch hit his 35th career home run to become the University of North Alabama's all-time home run king as the Lions swept a Gulf South Conference double-header from Shorter, 8-6 and 16-3.

Holland finished the day six-for-nine with three runs scored and four runs batted in to lead a UNA offense that produced 24 runs on 25 hits over the two games.

Hubbuch's blast came in the third inning of the nightcap and broke a tie atop UNA's career home run list with Alan Pate, who had set the mark at 34 from 1993-96.

With the sweep, UNA improves to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter is now 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Tyler Joyner (4-2) got the win for UNA in the opener, pitching eight complete innings and allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. He left the game with UNA holding an 8-3 advantage but the Hawks loaded the bases on reliever Kaleb Barnes and closer Channing Wall gave up a two-run single and sacrifice fly to make it 8-6 before finally ending the threat.

UNA took the lead with a six-run second inning that began with four straight singles and two walks before an out was recorded. Reid Homan and Holland drove in two runs each in the inning and Logan Carter and Ben Cooley also drove in runs.

The Lions made it 8-0 in the fourth on a Tate Mathis RBI-double and a walk to T.J. Lockett with the bases loaded.

Shorter scoed three runs on Joyner in the seventh on four hits and a base on balls.

In the nightcap, Lane Wallace (4-1) went the distance for UNA, allowing just three runs on four hits in seven innings. He walked three and struckout eight.

Shorter took a quick 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings but UNA responded with a four run bottom of the second to take the lead for good. Carter had a two-run single and Homan and Lockett also drove in runs.

Hubbuch's solo home run to lead off the third inning sparked another four run inning and UNA pushed its lead to 8-2. The Lions added two more in the fourth and six in the fifth for a final 16-3 score.

Nine different UNA players had hits in the game and 10 different players scored at leadt one run.
