BASEBALL LIONS ROUT MONTEVALLO 14-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama's bats came to life in the final game of a Gulf South Conference series with Montevallo as the Lions scored 14 runs on 14 hits in a 14-1 rout of the Falcons.

After dropping the first two games of the series on Saturday, the Lions scored four runs in the second inning and added nine more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. UNA starter Shane Priest (4-1) kept Montevallo under control, allowing just one run on three hits in a complete-game, seven inning effort. He walked one and struckout six.

With the win, North Alabama improves to 15-10 overall and 8-4 in the GSC. Montevallo is 7-9 overall and 7-5 in league play.

UNA's Tate Mathis walked in the second inning and Reid Homan followed with a single. A Kevn Brenning triple drove in two runs and Brenning then scored on a T.J. Lockett RBI-single. Lockett then stole third and scored on a throwing error to make it 4-0.

After Montevallo scored its only run in the fourth inning, UNA exploded for nine in the top of the fifth to push its advantage to 13-1. Davis Elliott was hit-by-pitch and Kyle Hubbuch walked. Brandt Holland then blasted his third home run of the series. Logan Carter kept the rally going with a single and Peyton Sockwell walked. Homan doubled in two runs to make it 9-1 and Brenning had an RBI-single to make it 10-1. Lockett was hit-by-pitch and Davis Elliott doubled in Brenning to make it 11-1. Hubbuch walked to load the bases  and Holland was hit-by-pitch to force in a run. Carter then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Hubbuch.

In the seventh, Holland reached on a fielder's choice and Sockwell doubled him in for the final run.

Homan went four-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI, while Holland was two-for-four with two runs and four runs batted in, Brenning was two-for-four with two runs and three RBI and Lockett was two-for-four with two runs and one RBI.

UNA plays a non-GSC game on Tuesday (March 20) at Auburn-Montgomery at 5 p.m.
