UNA SOFTBALL TOPS CHRISTIAN BROTHERS 12-0

FLORENCE –North Alabama scored in the top of every inning during a 12-0 win over Christian Brothers Sunday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The 12th straight win gave the Lions a 35-4 overall record with a 22-2 mark in GSC play.

The Lions pounded out 12 runs off 14 hits, including seven that went for extra bases. Meleah Hargett and Kara Brewer each went 3-for-3 at the plate while UNA pitchers Megan Garst and Veronica Westfall combined on the one-hit shutout.

The game was originally scheduled to be a home game for CBU before being moved to Florence due to weather in the Memphis area over the weekend. The Lions were the visitors on the scoreboard and batted in the top of the inning, allowing the team to get off to a fast start.

UNA sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the first inning. Alex Brown started the scoring with a bases-loaded triple to right field. The hit drove in three runs and gave the Lions the early lead. Brown later scored from third on a single by Katie Eakes.

North Alabama plated three runs each in the top of the second and third innings. An RBI-single by Brewer was followed by Hannah Shollenberger's first career triple to make the score 6-0. Shollenberger then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brown.

In the top of the third, back-to-back doubles by Mackenzie Roberts and Reagan Tittle pushed another run across the plate. Hargett and Brewer also each drove in another run to give the Lions a 10-0 lead.

Single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings wrapped up the scoring before the game ended via the eight-run mercy rule. UNA got an RBI-single by Roberts and a sacrifice fly by Shelby Woodard.

Garst (16-2) struck out five batters in the first three innings before yielding to Westfall, who retired six of the seven batters she faced.

Roberts had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Brown also finished with a career-high four RBI.

The same two teams will play a double header on Monday. First pitch is set for noon at the UNA Softball Complex.
