UNA SOFTBALL TOPS CHOCTAWS 7-2 IN GSC TOURNEY

FLORENCE – Top seed North Alabama scored seven runs over the final three innings to rally for a 7-2 win over Mississippi College Friday in the second round of the Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament. With the victory, the Lions improve to 44-5 and one win away from returning to the GSC championship game.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Lions got a three-run home run from Hannah Shollenberger and never looked back. UNA added two runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to wrap up the scoring, finishing with 10 hits on the day.

Mississippi College (29-16) took the lead on an RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth. The Choctaws, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, were the only team to win a three-game series against UNA this season.

After allowing the first run of the game, UNA starter Megan Garst retired 10 of the next 12 batters she faced to get the win in the circle. The sophomore from Columbiana allowed one run on six hits with no walks in seven innings of work. She improved to 22-2 on the season.

Trailing for the first time in the GSC Tournament, the Lions wasted little time answering in the top of the fifth inning. A single by Meleah Hargett and a double by Kara Brewer put runners at second and third for Shollenberger, who belted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left center. The three-run shot was the fifth of the season for the sophomore from Florence.

North Alabama led off the sixth inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Mackenzie Roberts and Veronica Westfall. In the top of the seventh, UNA got an RBI-ground out by Katie Parr. Reagan Tittle also scored on an error to give the Lions a 7-1 lead.

The Choctaws added a run in the bottom of the seventh but could get no closer.

Brewer finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Shollenberger and Tittle also each went 2-for3 on the day.

The third day of the GSC Tournament has been altered. The first of four originally-scheduled games is tentatively scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with Mississippi College taking on West Florida in an elimination game. Start times and location are subject to change.

In other second-day action Friday at the UNA Softball Complex, West Florida eliminated Delta State 5-4. The Argonauts will play Mississippi College in an elimination game, with the winner set to face the Lions. Lee also defeated Montevallo and will play UAH on Saturday. Valdosta State is the only other undefeated team at the event. The Blazers knocked off UAH and will await the winner of the Lee/UAH contest.
