JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama picked up its first win of the season and first win as an NCAA Division I institution with a 2-1 win in the second game of a double-header against Jacksonville State.
The Lions held a 9-5 lead in the eighth inning and took a 10-9 lead in the ninth before JSU rallied to take a 12-10 victory.
In game two, UNA scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and three Lion pitchers combined to limit the Gamecocks to a run in the eighth and just five hits in the nightcap at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
Sophomore
Jacob Laws got the win, allowing no runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts over four innings.
Keegan Foge pitched two scoreless innings of middle relief, allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.
Bryant Claunch closed out the effort with three innings of work to earn the save. He gave up one run with two walks and three strikeouts.
UNA got on the board in the third when
Gerardo Miranda singled, stole second and scored on a
Reid Homan rbi-single. The Lions added a run in the fourth when
Peyton Thomas doubled and scored on a double by
Davis Elliott.
JSU plated its only run in the eighth on two singles and a sacrifice fly off Claunch. In the ninth, Claunch allowed one walk but retired the Gamecocks to preserve the win.
In the opener, seven Lions had hits, led by
Reid Singewald who was four-for-four with a run scored and two RBI. Elliott was two-for-five with two home runs and four runs batted in.
UNA got a run in the first, three in the second, two in the fifth, three in the seventh and one in the ninth. JSU scored five runs over the first two innings and were then held scoreless from five frames before pushing seven runs across in the final two innings.
UNA starter
Colin Chamblin allowed five runs on seven hits over the first five innings, walking five and striking out five.
Josh Stillman allowed three runs on three hits over two innings. Foge pitched one inning and gave up one run on one hit.
Hunter Davidson (0-1), took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in the final one-third of an inning.
North Alabama is now 1-2 overall, while Jacksonville State is 2-1.
The Lions open their home schedule on Friday, Feb. 22 at home against Tennessee-Martin.
