FLORENCE, Ala. -- North Alabama got hits from seven different batters, including home runs from
Peyton Thomas and
Kylan Barnett, as the Lions downed Lipscomb 7-6 in the second game of a three-game ASUN Conference set at Mike Lane Field.
UNA starter
Chase Best (1-4) threw 144 pitches over eight innings of work and left the contest with a 7-4 lead. Lipscomb then scored two runs in the ninth inning and had another runner on base when reliever
Austin Emener struckout Maddux Houghton to end the game.
The win, North Alabama's second in a row, improves UNA's record to 3-17 overall and 2-6 in the ASUN. Lipscomb is now 7-10 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Lipscomb scored a run in the top of the first as Haddon Adams struckout but reached base on a passed ball, went to second on a passed ball and later scored on a sacrifice fly.
UNA answered in the bottom of the first and
Drew Hudson singled,
Devne Daniel doubled and Thomas cleared the bases with his first home run of the season to give the Lions a 3-1 advantage.
Lipscomb cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the fourth and then took the lead with a two-run fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Dominick McIntyre walked and scored on a two-run blast by Barnett to put UNA back on top 5-4.
The Lions added insurance runs in the sixth as
Austin Thrasher walked and scored on a
Levi Jensen RBI-single. Hudson then doubled in Jensen to make it 7-4.
Best allowed four runs, but just two earned, in eight innings of work. He walked one and struckout seven. Emener then came on and recorded two quick outs before three consecutive Lipscomb hits closed the gap to 7-6.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
