FLORENCE, Ala. -- Down 3-2, North Alabama left two runners on base in the seventh inning and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth as the Lions dropped the ASUN series finale to Bellarmine at Mike Lane Field.
In the seventh, UNA got two runners on with no one out before a failed bunt attempt ended in a pop out, a runner was thrown out at the plate while trying to score on a ground ball and a fly out ended the threat.
In the ninth,
Peyton Thomas singled and
Kevin Brenning got an infield single to lead off the inning. With two outs,
Devne Daniel drew a walk to load the bases and Bellarmine reliever Anthony Ethington eventually struck out
Kylan Barnett to end the game. Barnett had four near misses on foul balls down both lines.
With the loss, UNA is 5-32 overall and 4-14 in the ASUN Conference.. Bellarmine is now 12-24 overall and 7-12 in the ASUN.
The loss spoiled a strong pitching performance by UNA senior
Kyle Moore who threw 137 pitches in a complete-game effort. He allowed three runs, just two earned on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He only allowed two hits and four total base runners after the third inning. It was Moore's first career complete game at UNA and just the third overall complete game by a UNA pitcher on the Division I level.
UNA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Drew Hudson got a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a
Reid Homan RBI single. It was the fourth consecutive game where North Alabama scored in the first inning.
Bellarmine got two runs in the third on a combination of three singles and a double.
The Knights then added a run in the fourth that was aided by a passed ball.The Lions then left nine total runners on base from the fourth inning on.
Reid Homan went 3-for-4 in the game, giving him seven hits in the three-game series. At one point he reached base in eight straight plate appearances with a walk and seven hits.
North Alabama plays at Austin Peay State on Tuesday.
