MONTGOMERY, Ala. --
Kylan Barnett broke up a no-hitter with a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning and spark a three-run rally, but it wasn't enough as North Alabama dropped a 10-3 decision to Alabama State.
UNA, now 4-22 on the season, fell behind 9-0 as Alabama State got a run in the third inning, four in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Hornets' starter Osvaldo Mendez only allowed two walks to UNA through the first six innings before Barnett's home run. The Lions then followed with a
Peyton Thomas double, a
Harris Kain single and a Garret Smith walk to load the bases with no outs. Thomas scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2 and a
Landon Langston sacrifice fly drove in Kain to make it 9-3.
Kevin Brenning walked and
Dominick McIntyre singled to reload the bases before
Gerardo Miranda hit into an inning ending double play.
Alabama State added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final count 9-3.
UNA finished the game with five hits, led by Barnett with two.
North Alabama starter
Jacob James took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits over four innings. He walked one and struckout five. Four other Lions pitched in the game.
UNA hosts a three-game ASUN Conference series against Kennesaw State beginning Friday evening at 5 p.m. at Mike Lane Field.
