UNA MEN CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH LOSS AT JSU

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State shot 65 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes to break open a close game at the half in a 69-52 home win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team on Saturday. The loss closes out the regular season for the Lions, who enter the post-season with a 9-20 overall record.
 
With a 2-14 record in ASUN Conference play, UNA will be the sixth seed from the West Division and open the conference tournament on March 1 at FGCU. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (CST) at Alico Arena.
 
On Saturday, UNA trailed 30-26 at the break. A jumper by Isaac Chatman cut the deficit to two points early in the second half. The Lions, however, would not connect from the floor for 5:16 while JSU went on a 16-7 run to grab a 46-31 lead with 14:41 remaining.
 
The Lions got within nine when a basket by Will Soucie at the 11:48 make made the score 48-39, but the home team hit two free throws on the ensuing possession and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
 
The Gamecocks were 13-of-20 from the floor in the second half, including four three-point baskets. UNA connected on just 7-of-30 field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes.
 
Ortiz finished with a game-high 27 points. The freshman from Shreveport, La., added seven rebounds and two steals after playing all 40 minutes on the night.
