MADISON, Ala. – Playing for the first time at Toyota Field, home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the University of North Alabama baseball team gave up six runs in the first inning and could never catch the 14
th ranked Auburn Tigers in a 13-1 loss.
UNA is now 1-3 overall, while Auburn improved to 3-1.
Auburn's six runs in the first inning came on a combination of four hits, two walks a hit batter and an error. The Tigers then added three runs in the third inning for a 9-0 lead.
North Alabama got on the board in the fourth as
Kyle Machado singled,
Jonathan Lane doubled and Machado scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Ferrigno.
The Tigers got a solo home run in the fifth to make it 10-1 and a three-run sixth pushed it to 13-1.
The Lions were held to five total hits, with Lane leading the way with two doubles.
UNA starter
Avery Brown (0-1) allowed six runs on three hits with two walks in one third of an inning.
Caden Barnett came on to pitch two complete innings and gave up two runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Carson Howard pitched an inning and two thirds and allowed one run on three hits.
Joey Malecha pitched an inning and a third and allowed four runs on three hits.
Josh Bowerman was the final pitcher for the Lions and he allowed no runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
North Alabama hosts a three-game series against Miami of Ohio beginning Friday at Mike Lane Field.
