Lions fall to Racers in Florence, 10-3

RJ Sherwood went 2-for-3 with a three run homer

FLORENCE, Ala. (April 22, 2025) – The University of North Alabama baseball team dropped its midweek matchup against Murray State on Tuesday by a score of 10-3. Senior right fielder RJ Sherwood hit for a home run and added three RBIs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Lions (15-23, 10-8 ASUN) hit six times on the afternoon with all three runs coming in the bottom of the sixth thanks to Sherwood's home run. At the time, the home run cut the Racers lead 6-3.

Murray State (28-9, 10-5 OVC) had 14 hits to go along with nine RBIs for the game. The Racers used two three run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to take ahold of the game.

North Alabama threw six pitchers today with Reese Young earning the start and going four innings. Young and John Allen Stogner earned the teams strikeouts against the Racers.

Sherwood was the highlight as he went 2-for-3, one run plated, home run and three RBIs. Charlie Cochran got the start at catcher and earned a hit. Leighton Jenkins, Nash Rippen and Ethan Walker rounded out the other three hits for the Lions.

The game was a stalemate until the top of the fifth inning. Stogner subbed in for Young after the scoreless five frames. A single then a Racer double led to two in scoring position. After a fly out, Murray State homered over the left field wall to break the stalemate.

Justin Battle stepped in at the mound at the top of the sixth. A single, walk, wild pitch and hit batter loaded the bases. Two more walks scored two runners before Gavin Oswald filled in on the rubber. Next batter grounded into a double play but scored the runner on third for a 6-0 lead.

Rippen doubled into left field down in the count before Jonathan Lane walked on four straight balls. RJ Sherwood hit his home run to cut the deficit to just three heading into the seventh.

However, that would be the final from the Lions. Murray State added four runs over the final three innings to end the game by a final score of 10-3.
