The UNA Cheerleaders are not only
involved in supporting the UNA sports teams, but are also involved
in the Florence community and in all facets of UNA student life.
While cheering on the sidelines is
the heart of the role as UNA cheerleader, you will also have the
opportunity to represent UNA in many other areas. In the past year,
UNA cheerleaders have been spokesperson for local businesses, made a
commercial for a local radio station, made many school visits,
judged cheering competitions, held clinics, as well as numerous
other enjoyable events. The cheerleaders are frequently involved in
many UNA student activities such as orchestrating all pep-rallies,
many varied tailgating activities, organizing and sponsoring campus
spirit events and awards, numerous parade appearances and many
public appearances on behalf of the University.
UNA Cheerleading has three
distinct goals.
- We strive to support all UNA
Athletic teams.
- We serve as Ambassadors for UNA
in the community and at various College activities.
- We participate as an athlete in
the sport of Competitive College Cheerleading.
Duties:
UNA Cheerleading is a year long
commitment. Tryouts are normally held in April and shortly
following tryouts cheerleading duties begin. In the months of May
and June, cheerleaders are involved in practices, public appearances
and other responsibilities. While there are some activities in late
spring and early summer, the majority of the season preparation
occurs during the months of July and August. Regular practices will
be held these months as well as attendance at a selected college
cheer camp. At the camp, the UNA cheerleaders not only learn but
also get their first opportunity of the year to compete with other
colleges in the sport of cheerleading.
Regular Cheer duties commence in the
week prior to classes, with a traditional Work Week. During Work
Week, the cheerleaders perfect the game day routines, cheers, stunts
as well as have many opportunities to represent the University and
have fun as a group.
Cheerleaders have the opportunity to cheer at all UNA football games
and home basketball games. Additional appearances are made at UNA
and community events and functions. Practice is held three times
per week with additional training and conditioning as needed.
