LIONS FINISH FOURTH IN GOLF REGIONAL

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of North Alabama men's golf team saved its best round for last, turning in a 283 to finish fourth in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament. UNA had rounds of 289, 286 and 283 to finish behind West Florida, Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern. The fourth place finish in the South Region and fifth place finish overall in the South/South Central Super Regional should be enough to send the Lions on to the Division II Championships for the eighth time in school history.

UNA's Wes Smith finished tied for fifth with a 211 total. He had rounds of 74, 68 and 69. 

Daniel Creel finished eighth at 214, while  Brett Munson tied for 15th, Davis Gies tied for 23rd and Matt Gourgeot finished 40th.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- North Alabama started the day nine nine shots back and couldn't make up any ground as West Florida finished with a final round 282, capturing its third straight Blue Cross Blue Shield/Gulf South Conference Men's Golf Championship played at Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, AR.

  UNA WINS SPRING CLASSIC BY 25 STROKES
 

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama had golfers finish first, second and fourth overall and led the Lions to a 25-stroke victory in the 2008 UNA Spring Classic at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.

  CREEL LEADS LIONS TO SEVENTH PLACE FINISH
  VALDOSTA, Ga. - In his first tournament of the Spring, University of North Alabama All-American Daniel Creel made the all-tournament team and led the Lions to a seventh place finish at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate Tournament at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
  LION GOLFERS FINISH 13TH
  LAKELAND, Fla. -- The University of North Alabama golf team turned in rounds of 302 and 305 but could make up little ground as the Lions finished 13th in the Matlock Collegiate Classic hosted by Florida Southern College.

  The 2008 University of North Alabama golf team will have to live up to some high expectations, but that’s nothing new for a Lions’ program that has played in seven NCAA championship tournaments since 1996.
  COLUMBUS STATE WINS RAIN-SHORTENED INDIAN BAYOU
  DESTIN, Fla. -- Columbus State posted a 293 Sunday in the only round of a rain-shortened Indian Bayou Classic to take the tournament title with a two-stroke lead over Arkansas Tech.
  UNA WINS FALL CLASSIC AT BLACKBERRY TRAIL
  FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama golf team turned in a final round 283 to break a first round tie and post an eight-stroke victory over Newberry at the UNA Fall Classic at Blackberry Trail.
  UNA GOLFERS WIN DERRALL FORMAN INVITATIONAL
  CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The University of North Alabama golf team turned in rounds of 288 and 284 to post a 10-stroke victory over Delta State in the 2007 Derrall Foreman Invitational.  UNA was the only school in the 18-team field to post a score under par as UNA was -4. Delta State was six over par and Henderson State was eight over par.

The University of North Alabama golf team turned in rounds of 289 and 293 to post an impressive third place finish at the Kiawah Island Invitational.

  UNA'S GAMBLE NAMED REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR
 

FLORENCE -- University of North Alabama golf coach Billy Gamble has been named the NCAA Division II South Region Coach of the Year.

  SMITH EARNS SECOND TEAM PING ALL-AMERICAN
 

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. —  University of North Alabama sophomore Wes Smith of Florence, Ala., has been named second team PING All-America by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Mitch Boles of Central Oklahoma, Barry’s Hernan Borja, Daniel Creel of North Alabama, West Florida’s Matthew Galloway, Andrew Georgiou and Christian Ries of Columbus State, Abilene Christian’s Hughes Joannes, Eric Justesen of CSU- Stanislaus and Sonoma State’s Farin Todd were previously named the PING All-America First-Team.

  UNA'S CREEL NAMED PING ALL-AMERICAN
 

ALLENDALE, Mich. — University of North Alabama junior Daniel Creel of Killen, Ala., has been named first-team PING Division II All-America by the Golf Coaches Association of America. A total of nine players comprised the first team.

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. -- There was little drama for the University of North Alabama golf team Wednesday as the Lions turned in a tournament low round of 279 to win the NCAA Division II South Regional by a whopping 18 strokes over Florida Southern.

Hot Springs, AR—The University of North Alabama golf team turned in its worst round of the tournament Tuesday and had to settle for a fourth place finish at the 2007 Gulf South Conference Golf Championships.  UNA had entered the final round just one stroke behind defending champion West Florida but lost ground to  the Argonauts.

DOTHAN, Ala. -- Longtime University of North Alabama golf coach Billy Gamble was inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame on April 14 at the Dothan Civic Center.

MONTEREY BAY, Calif. -- The University of North Alabama golf team continued its most successful Spring season in school history with a strong second place finish in a 14-school field at the Cal State University- Monterey Bay Otter Invitational.

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. -- Central Oklahoma turned in a final round 298 to edge past host North Alabama and win the 2007 UNA Spring Classic by one stroke at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Fighting Joe course.

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. -- West Florida turned in an opening round 286 to take a four-stroke lead over North Alabama and Abilene Christian in the UNA Spring Classic at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail of the Shoals Fighting Joe course.

  CREEL AND SMITH LEAD LIONS TO SECOND GOLF WIN OF THE SEASON
 

CUSCAWILLA, Ga. -- Daniel Creel and Wes Smith turned in final rounds of 71 to help lead the University of North Alabama golf team to its second win of the young golf season.  The Lions finished the three round event with an 855 total, finishing 25 strokes ahead of South Carolina-Aiken - the three-time defending Division II National Champions. Florida Southern was  27 strokes back.

  LION GOLFERS FINISH FIFTH AT SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGIATE
  VALDOSTA, Ga. –The University of North Alabama golf team dropped one spot in the final round but still managed a strong fifth place finished in the Southeastern Collegiate Tournament, hosted by Valdosta State at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
  LION GOLFERS DOWN DIVISION I FIELD AT GROVER PAGE CLASSIC
  JACKSON, Tenn. -  The University of North Alabama took the team title in a field of NCAA Division I schools at the 2007 Grover Page Classic. The Lions posted a tournament total of 868 in the 16-team field that included 12 NCAA Division I institutions. Following the Lions, a distant 15 strokes back, was Tennessee Tech at 883. Murray State was third, Tennessee-Martin fourth and Lewis and Morehead State tied for fifth.  Southern Illinois was seventh, followed by Central Arkansas, Chicago State, Centenary, Loyola-Chicago, Cincinnati, Lipscomb, Union (Tn.), Tennessee State and Kentucky Wesleyan.
  LIONS HOLD LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND OF GROVER PAGE CLASSIC
  JACKSON, Tenn. - The University of North Alabama holds seven-stroke lead after the first round of the  2007 Grover Page Classic.  The 16-team field includes 12 NCAA Division I institutions.  Hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin, the Grover Page Classic is a 54-hole tournament being played at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. The 90-player field features competitors from 16 institutions including five from Tennessee. The par-72 course is playing at 6,783 yards.
  UNA'S GAMBLE TO JOIN WIREGRASS HALL OF FAME
  DOTHAN, Ala. -- Longtime University of North Alabama golf coach Billy Gamble has been selected to be inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame on April 14 at the Dothan Civic Center. A Dothan native, Gamble has spent the last 19 years as golf coach at North Alabama and he has helped direct the Lions to numerous milestone successes, including the school’s first team appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1996, an NCAA Regional Championship and a fourth place national finish in 2002 and another NCAA Regional Championship and sixth place national finish in 2003.
  UNA GOLFERS FINISH SIXTH AT INDIAN BAYOU
  DESTIN, Fla. -- The University of North Alabama golf team finished a distant sixth at the Indian Bayou Classic in a tournament where the final round was rained out. Columbus State finished with a 303, 15-over-par total, while UNA turned in a 319 score.
  LION GOLFERS WIN UNA FALL CLASSIC
  FLORENCE -- North Alabama lost 10 strokes off it's opening round pace but still held on to win the 2006 UNA Fall Classic at Blackberry Trails Golf Course.  UNA shot 276 on Monday but could only manage a 286 total in the final round for a 562 total. Lindenwood wasn't able to make up any ground, however, with a 286 total of its own to finish second at 574.
