UNA WOMEN BLANK TUSKEGEE IN NCAA TENNIS
 

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of North Alabama claimed a 5-0 victory over Tuskegee in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis South Regional Thursday morning at the Valdosta State Tennis Courts.

The Lions swept all three doubles matches, dropping just two games in the process. At No. 1, Pippa Reakes and Jessica Strucher claimed an 8-0 victory over Kamila Triche and Charlotte Pulliam while Yuliya Zelenskaya and Louise Klasen downed Jill Person and Francine Smith 8-1 at No. 2. Mallory Waites and Arrie Moore finished the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over over Costanza Aranda and Angela Dixon at No. 3.

UNA closed out the victory with a pair of straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 in singles play. Reakes topped Salama Shelton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 while Zelenskaya downed Triche by the same score at No. 2.

The University of North Alabama men’s and women’s tennis teams each extended their winning streaks Thursday by sweeping Gulf South Conference and in-state rival West Alabama at the UNA Tennis Complex.

FLORENCE -- On the heels of four straight wins, the University of North Alabama women's tennis team has climbed to a No. 4 ranking in the South Region, and the UNA men are also fourth in the region.

The University of North Alabama tennis teams climbed above the .500 mark for the season after combining to post a 5-0 record over spring break. The men’s team went 3-0 with victories over North Greenville, Erskine and Brevard to improve to 6-5 on the year, while the UNA women improved to 6-4 after knocking off North Greenville and Presbyterian.

The Argonauts top-ranked men’s team downed UNA 8-1, while the fifth-ranked UWF women’s team posted a 9-0 victory.

Both Lion squads knocked off Alabama-Huntsville and fell to a Top-5 Valdosta State team.  The men’s team opened the day with a 5-3 win over UAH before dropping a 5-0 decision to the third-ranked Blazers.

The Lion men’s and women’s teams both won their matches by identical 5-0 scores and are scheduled to face UAH and Valdosta State Saturday in day two of the event.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Everton Silva picked up a win at No. 2 singles but it was far from enough as the University of North Alabama men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at Division I Samford.  Despite Silva's hard-fought, three-set win, the Lions dropped the other five singles and three doubles matches. The loss drops UNA's men to 2-3 overall.

  FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama picked up two tennis wins Sunday as both the Lion men's and women's teams downed Stillman 9-0.

BIRMINGHAM
– The University of North Alabama tennis teams opened the 2007 season with a pair of 7-0 defeats against Division I Alabama-Birmingham Friday at the Brook Highland Racquet Club in Birmingham.

The Blazers were able to pick up the doubles and singles sweep from the men’s and women’s team in the season opener for both programs.

The UNA women were able to rebound the following day, however, topping Montevallo 6-3 to give head coach Al Morgan is first collegiate victory.

The Lion men’s and women’s teams will return to action next Friday, hosting Bethel College at 2 p.m.
