FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team went six-of-six from the free throw line in the final minute of play to edge Oakwood 94-90 Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The second straight home victory evens UNA's record at 2-2 on the year.
With the Ambassadors holding a 90-88 lead down the stretch, the UNA's Austin Timms, Dimarrio Jackson and Jeff Hodge each went 2-for-2 from the foul line while the Lions' defense forced three turnovers to seal the win.
The frantic final minute capped a rally for UNA after the Lions trailed throughout the game. Oakwood led by as many as six in the second half, holding an 80-74 advantage with 6:19 remaining. Trailing by six, the Lions again turned to the charity stripe to get back in the game with Hodge, Jackson and Da'Shaun Griffin each hitting two foul shots to tie the game at 80-80 at the 4:43 mark. From there, the game was tied four more times.
After struggling from the free throw line the previous game against Fisk, UNA was 35-for-47 from the charity stripe against Oakwood. Jackson, who finished the night with 12 points, was 10-for-10 from the foul line.
Five players reached double figures in scoring including John Fletcher's game-high 25 points. Hodge and Bilal Richardson added 15 points each while Timms turned in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Oakwood (4-9) led 42-39 at the half after Ronnie Abrams connected on a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining. Abrams finished with 21 points to lead the Ambassadors.
In the second half, the Lions stayed within striking distance, but could never mount a substantial run to pull away. Timms scored all 13 of his points over the final 20 minutes and the Lions shot 51.7 percent as a team in the second half.
UNA will host Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Saturday in the second game of a double-header. The UNA women will play Montevallo first. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
