WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS AT BELMONT 5-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn., - Belmont won five of the six singles matches to rally for a 5-2 win over the University of North Alabama women's tennis on Friday in the 2016 season opener for the Lions. UNA won the doubles point but could not hold the lead at the Brentwood Indoor Tennis Center.

After the Bruins (1-1) took an early lead with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, UNA responded with two wins to take the overall point. Junior Morgan Jose and freshman Claudia Arroyo posted a 6-3 win at No. 3, followed by a 6-4 victory at the top spot by junior Olivera Ngouabeu and sophomore Donna Haycock.

Belmont was able to take a 2-1 overall lead by winning No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Lions were close to evening the match when Arroyo won the first set at No. 4 singles, but the match was stopped because of an injury to give Belmont a 3-1 overall advantage.

The Bruins were able to clinch with a win at No. 1 singles, winning a tough three set match 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Belmont added a win at No. 6 for its final point. Freshman Nele Seitz was another bright spot for the Lions, winning her first collegiate match 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

"Playing a very good Belmont team is a great way to kick off the season," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "We needed to challenge ourselves and that's exactly what happened.

"Nele played tough," Bishop added. "She trailed in both sets and just kept playing hard. It was a tough call to stop Claudia's match. She has been dealing with a muscle pull and wasn't moving well so I decided to stop the match since we have a conference match next weekend. I was very proud of her effort under the circumstances."

The UNA women will be back in action on Saturday with its 2016 home opener. The Lions will open Gulf South Conference play against West Georgia. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the UNA Tennis Complex.
