SOFTBALL SWEEPS SHORTER TO IMPROVE TO 20-4

ROME, Ga., – In a rematch of last season's Gulf South Conference championship game, the University of North Alabama softball team picked up a key Gulf South Conference sweep at Shorter on Saturday. After the Hawks claimed the 2015 GSC title by defeating UNA twice, the Lions were able to get revenge, winning 3-0 and 8-1. The win gives UNA a 6-2 GSC record and a 20-4 overall mark, marking the fastest the team has reached the 20-win plateau in program history.

The losses for Shorter represent the first in GSC play this season. The Hawks (9-3 overall, 3-2 GSC) entered the series boasting the GSC's highest team batting average (.381) as well as the league's top earned run average (0.81). With the wins, UNA becomes the first team in Division II to reach 20 wins on the season.

In the opener, Hillary Carpenter recorded the two-hit shutout for UNA. The win gives her an 8-2 record on the season, as well as a school-record 49 career victories in the circle. The junior from Hatton also added four strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

Offensively, the Lions got the only run they would need with a two-out rally in the top of the third inning. After back-to-back singles by Bailey Nelson and Courtney Shields, Nelson scored on an error to give UNA the 1-0 lead.

A two-run sixth inning gave the Lions some breathing room. Pinch runner Destiny Wright scored on an error, before a groundout by Anna Gayle Norris scored Harlie Barkley from third base. For the game, UNA had just four hits, but strung them together in the scoring innings.

In the second game, North Alabama produced eight runs off 12 hits. Shorter went ahead 1-0 after plating a single run in the bottom of the first inning before a four-run third inning gave UNA the lead for good.

Nelson led off the frame with a single and later scored on an RBI-single by Reagan Tittle. A two-run double by Barkley then gave the Lions a 3-1 lead. Barkley then scored on a single by Norris, which chased Shorter starter Hannah Draper from the circle.

The next three runs scored by the Lions were the result of solo homeruns. Freshman Mackenzie Roberts hit one in the fourth and one in the sixth innings.  Brooklynn Clark also blasted a solo shot in the top of the fifth inning. Shields wrapped up the scoring for the Lions, getting a two-out double in the sixth before scoring on an error.

Raven Cole recorded the pitching victory. The junior improved to 11-1 on the year after scattering four hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.

The two teams will conclude the three-game GSC series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (Eastern) on the Shorter campus in Rome, Ga.
