LIONS SWEEP MONTEVALLO, IMPROVE TO 26-4

MONTEVALLO – A pair of road wins at Montevallo on Wednesday gave the University of North Alabama softball team a 26-4 record on the season. The Lions recorded the 3-2, 6-2 sweep to run their winning streak to nine games.

In the opener, Brooklynn Clark went 3-for-4 at the plate and Hillary Carpenter pitched seven innings as the Lions held on for the 3-2 victory. UNA led 1-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after the third before holding off a Montevallo rally.

The Falcons plated a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning and added another in the seventh before Carpenter (12-2) recorded the final out with the tying run on base. She finished the game after allowing two runs off six hits with five strikeouts.

Bailey Nelson led off the game with a single and later scored from third base on an error to give UNA the early lead. In the third inning, back-to-back doubles by Courtney Shields and Reagan Tittle made the score 2-0. Tittle reached third on a single by Harlie Barkley before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Anna Gayle Norris to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

UNA got at least one hit in the top of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings but would not score again, stranding eight runners on base. Shields and Tittle each finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.

North Alabama plated runs in four of the seven innings of the nightcap to get the 6-2 win. Shields, Tittle and Clark had two hits each as the Lions went through three Montevallo pitchers.

Nelson led off the game with a walk and later scored on an RBI-ground out by Clark. Shields also singled and reached third before stealing home to give UNA a 2-0 lead. Norris made the score 3-0 by leading off the top of the second inning with a solo homerun.

The lead reached 5-0 in the third inning on an RBI-single by Clark and an unearned run when Barkley stole third base and scored on a Montevallo throwing error.

The final run for the Lions came in the top of the fifth inning. After Tittle tripled to right field, she scored on a double by Barkley. The Falcons were able to plate runs in the bottom of the third and sixth innings, but would never threaten the lead.

Raven Cole improved to 13-1 with the pitching victory. She scattered three hits and struck out 10 in seven innings of work.

UNA will return to GSC play with an updated schedule over the weekend at Lee. The two teams will now play a double-header Friday at 1 p.m., with a third game slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
