LION SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH UAH

HUNTSVILLE – After dropping the opening game of a double-header to No. 11 UAH 7-3, the fourth-ranked University of North Alabama softball team held on to win the second game 8-6 and earn the split Saturday afternoon at Charger Park in Huntsville. The three-game Gulf South Conference series will be decided Sunday with a single game set for 2 p.m.

With the split, UNA moves to 36-5 on the season with a 20-3 record in GSC play. UAH is now 31-8 overall and 17-6 in league action.

A number of streaks came to an end in the opener. Aside from ending the Lions' school-record 18-game winning streak, the defeat also represented the first road loss of the season. Also, Courtney Shields' 24-game streak of reaching base at least once was ended after the senior finished the contest 0-for-2 with a sacrifice.

With UNA nursing a 3-2 lead, the Chargers plated five runs over the final three innings to pull away for the win. A four-run sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game. After tying the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning, UAH took a 4-3 lead in the sixth before back-to-back singles made the score 7-3. The Lions struck out three straight times in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

North Alabama took an early lead on an RBI-single by Brooklynn Clark in the top of the first inning. After UAH answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Lions regained the lead in the top of the fourth. A single by Clark was followed by a two-run homerun by Harlie Barkley.

UAH scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth and the game remained tied until the Chargers' four-run sixth inning.

At the plate, Clark was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Bailey Nelson also went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Hillary Carpenter took the loss in the circle. She allowed six earned runs off nine hits to fall to 17-3 on the season.

In the second game, the Lions led 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. UAH scored four runs and had the tying run at the plate before a line out to third base ended the game.

For the game, UNA scored eight runs off 11 hits, scoring early and often. A three-run first inning got things going for the Lions. An RBI-single by Clark and a two-run double by Madeline Lee gave UNA the 3-0 lead.

After UAH plated a single run in the bottom of the second inning, the Lions added to their lead in the top of the third. Lee connected on a two-out, two-run homerun to give UNA a 5-1 advantage. The lead reached 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Clark drove in another run and the Lions added an unearned run off an error to grab the six-run lead.

UAH added a run in the bottom of the fourth and neither team scored again until the final frame. Lee led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer to left field. The shot again gave UNA a six-run cushion, which the Lions would need down the stretch.

For the game, Lee was 3-for-5 with five RBI. Clark and Amy Carden each went 2-for-4 while Shields was 2-for-5 at the plate. Raven Cole scattered eight hits over seven innings to get the victory in the circle. She added eight strikeouts and improved to 18-2 on the year.

The rubber match on Sunday is being promoted as the Rivalry Showdown Pink Game in support of breast cancer awareness. Special pink t-shirts will be sold. WAFF anchor and long-time advocate for women's health Liz Hurley will throw out a ceremonial first pitch, and the teams will also honor Kim Couey – mother of former UAH All-American and current student assistant Macie Couey – who is presently in a battle against the disease. Both teams will also sport commemorative pink jerseys for the occasion.
