WOMEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS ALABAMA A&M 5-2

HUNTSVILLE – A 5-2 road victory at Alabama A&M pushed the University of North Alabama women's tennis team above the .500 mark to close the regular season on Wednesday. Three different players saw action for the first time this season as the Lions improved to 8-7 on the season.

Olivera Ngouabeu and Nele Seitz quickly disposed of the Bulldogs at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 win to give UNA the early lead. A&M won at No. 1 doubles to set up a showdown at No. 3. Sydney Childers and Ali Gean, each playing in their first match of the year, broke open a 3-3 tie and won 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.

With the 1-0 lead, Claudia Arroyo quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. After the Bulldogs got on the board with a win at No. 1 singles, Seitz made it 3-1 by winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 4. Molly Mason, also playing in her first match of the year, clinched it for the Lions with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

Donna Haycock also added a three-set win at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 victory. The Bulldogs got the remaining point by winning at No. 5 singles.

"I'm very proud of Sydney, Ali, and Molly," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "To play in their first match and be the clinching point showed that they really handled the pressure well."

UNA will now turn its attention to the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament April 14-16 in Montgomery. The Lions have clinched the No. 5 seed and will open quarterfinal action at 1:30 p.m. UNA will face the No. 4 seed, which has not been determined yet.
