UNA SOFTBALL SPLITS AT REGIONAL

FLORENCE – After dropping a 4-2 decision to UAH earlier in the day, the University of North Alabama softball team edged No. 8 Saint Leo 1-0 at the NCAA Division II South 1 regional to keep its season alive. The Lions (51-6) will face UAH Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the title game. UNA would have to beat the Chargers twice to advance.

Runs were at a premium on the day with the third-ranked Lions scoring only three times. UNA left 10 runners on base in the opener and only managed a single unearned run against Saint Leo.

Hillary Carpenter outdueled Alana Tabel in the nightcap. The junior from Hatton took a 1-0 lead and a no-hit bid into the seventh inning before Saint Leo broke through with a leadoff single. The potential tying run reached third base before Carpenter got Brittany Creamer to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

Carpenter finished the game with eight strikeouts and only one walk to improve to 25-3 on the season.

Tabel (14-3) scattered four hits and struck out one in an impressive outing of her own. After getting its first hit in the fourth inning, UNA was able to push its lone run across the plate in the top of the fifth. Peyton DeLong started the rally with a two-out single to center field. After Shelby Woodard reached on an error, Baily Nelson singled through the right side to drive home DeLong from second base.

The unearned run would be the only one Carpenter and the Lions would need. With the loss, Saint Leo ends its season with a 39-8 record.

The Lions also managed to break one more school record in the late game. Reagan Tittle's stolen base in the first inning gave UNA 86 on the year to break a single-season record. The previous mark of 84 was set during the 1994 campaign.

In the opener, UAH broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. After the Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, UAH regained the two-run lead with a single run in the top of the sixth and held on for the win.

Tyler Harrison (21-8) scattered six hits and kept the UNA batters off balance throughout the contest. The Lions got base runners in every inning but could not come up with the big hit, going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Both teams plated runs in the first inning. After the Chargers struck first in the top of the frame, an RBI-single by Tittle scored Nelson from third base.

In the fifth inning, UAH scored both runs with two outs, stringing together three straight hits to grab a 3-1 lead. The Lions answered in the bottom of the frame. Brooklynn Clark drew a walk and later scored on a two-out double by Anna Gayle Norris to make the score 3-2. Norris, however, was stranded at second to preserve the UAH lead.

The Chargers were able to add an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning to wrap up the scoring. Raven Cole (24-2) suffered the loss for just the second time this season. She allowed four runs off seven hits without recording a strikeout.

At the plate, Norris was the only UNA player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Seven different Chargers recorded one hit each to account for all of the UAH hits.
