LIONS SWEEP TIFFIN, TREVECCA TO MOVE TO 4-0

FLORENCE – A pair of victories on Saturday at the UNA Classic gave the University of North Alabama volleyball team a 4-0 start to the season. The Lions recorded 3-0 sweeps over Tiffin (25-14, 25-22, 25-21) and Trevecca Nazarene (25-19, 25-12, 25-14) to finish the event as the only unbeaten team.

Against Tiffin, Natasha Fomina had 19 kills in the sweep. The Lions hit .330 as a team and won each set in a very different fashion.

In the opening set, UNA raced to an 8-0 lead and never allowed the Dragons to get within six points throughout the game.

The Lions held a commanding lead again in the second set, but were forced to hold off a late Tiffin Rally. After a kill by Lexie Bradley gave UNA a 17-10 lead, the Dragons used an 11-5 run to pull within two points and prompt a North Alabama timeout. Kills by Ana Gabriela Pacheco and Jessica Austin, however, ended the frame.

In the third set, UNA had to rally for the victory. Trailing 19-11, the Lions closed the match on a 14-2 run. Three straight kills by Peyton Lang gave the Lions a 23-21 lead before back-to-back service aces by Bradley ended the match.

Jayden Davila-McClary recorded 42 assists for the Lions while Fomina added two blocks and a .371 hitting percentage for the match.

Against Trevecca, five different players recorded at least six kills in the win. Austin hit .588 for the match and led the way with 11 kills. Davila-McClary added 38 assists and 11 digs for the Lions.

Defensively, Ashtyn Kapovich produced a match-high 20 digs. Ava Carnley also reached double figures in the category with 10 digs for UNA.

UNA will play four matches next weekend in Indianapolis, Ind., at the UIndy Invitational. The Lions will take on West Texas A&M and Truman State on Friday before facing Ashland and Saginaw Valley State the following day on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
