LIONS TAKE SERIES WITH 8-0 WIN OVER SHORTER

FLORENCE – Hannah Bodenhorn pitched a no-hitter and the North Alabama bats came alive for eight runs off 10 hits in an 8-0 five-inning victory over Shorter Sunday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The home win clinches the three-game series for the Lions, who improve to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in GSC play.
 
UNA took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning when solo home runs by Anna Gayle Norris and Hannah Shollenberger ended the game. It was the fifth home run for each of the two players, tying for the team high. Shollenberger's shot to left field gave the Lions the 8-0 lead to evoke the mercy rule and give UNA its seventh last at-bat victory of the season.
 
Bodenhorn (2-0) had two walks to represent the Hawks only baserunners of the game. She added a strikeout and retired the final 10 batters faced. The game marked the second career no-hitter for the sophomore from Mt. Juliet, Tenn. She also no-hit Tuskegee in an 8-0 UNA victory last season.
 
North Alabama scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control early. After quickly loading the bases, the Lions took a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by Reagan Tittle. Marissa Hancock then cleared the bases with a grand slam to dead center.
 
Bailey Nelson led off the second inning with a single and later scored on an RBI-ground out by Norris to give the Lions the 6-0 lead.
 
Sabrina Gilliam, Tittle and Shollenberger each went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lions.
 
UNA will play a three-game series at West Florida next weekend. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the series with a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
