SOFTBALL CLOSES GULF COAST INVITE WITH TWO WINS

GULF SHORES – The University of North Alabama softball team got a pair of one-run victories on the final day of the Gulf Coast Invitational Sunday afternoon in Gulf Shores. The Lions got an extra-inning 1-0 win over Rollins before closing out the event with a 5-4 No. 22 Missouri-St. Louis. The sweep gives UNA a 4-2 record on the year.

In the opener, a sacrifice fly by Shelby Woodard scored Baily Nelson from third base in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nelson, who was placed on second base via the international ty-breaker rule, was sacrificed to third before back-to-back intentional walks loaded the bases. Woodard then connected on a fly ball to left field to bring home the winning run.

Hillary Carpenter was victorious in the pitching duel against a pair of Rollins hurlers. Carpenter scattered eight hits over eight innings to get the complete game shutout. She struck out five batters to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Lions were held to six hits in the game, including a 3-for-3 showing by Hannah Shollenberger.

Against Missouri-St. Louis, UNA carried a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Tritons rallied. After three UMSL runs tied the game, UNA answered in the top of the seventh when Shollenberger connected on a 2-1 count and homered to left center.

With the one-run lead, Carpenter came in to pitch the bottom of the seven. She retired three of four batters to get the save. Raven Cole got the win in the circle after working the first six innings. She allowed four runs off six hits with a strikeout to improve to 2-1 on the year.

UNA led throughout the game until the sixth. The Lions scored on a throwing error and added an RBI-single by Shollenberger in the top of the first inning. An RBI-single by Nelson made the score 3-0 in the top of the third.

After the Tritons scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly by Amy Carden gave the Lions the 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth.

Woodard was 3-for-4 with an RBI against UMSL. Shollenberger and Anna Gayle Norris added two hits each.

UNA will travel to Montevallo next weekend for five games at the Falcon Frenzy. The Lions will open at 9 a.m. on Friday against Ursuline.
