UNA SOFTBALL WINS TWICE AT DELTA STATE

CLEVELAND, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team scored 10 runs off 18 hits in a double-header sweep at Delta State on Saturday. The two wins give the Lions a 21-10 overall record and 11-6 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
 
Reagan Tittle was 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI and three extra-base hits. UNA also got complete-game victories on the day by Hillary Carpenter and Raven Cole.
 
In the opener, UNA took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before holding off a late rally by the Lady Statesmen. DSU pushed two runs across the plate and had the tying run in scoring position before Carpenter recorded the final out to improve to 11-4 on the season.
 
The complete-game win capped a seven-strikeout performance with two walks and six hits.
 
Single runs in the top of the third, sixth and seventh innings provided the offense for North Alabama. McKenna Ray led off the third inning with her first home run of the season.
 
With a runner on third, a ground out by Anna Gayle Norris in the top of the sixth scored the second run of the game for UNA. Destiny Wright tripled to lead off the seventh before scoring on an RBI-single by Shelby Woodard to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
 
Woodard was 3-for-3 with an RBI the first game. Hannah Shollenberger added a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
 
A three-run fourth inning broke open a close contest for UNA in the nightcap while a two-run seventh put the game out of reach. The Lions had 10 hits, including two home runs, a triple and four doubles. Cole also recorded the shutout after scattering four hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. She improved to 7-4 on the season.
 
The Lions struck first in the second game with a run in the top of the first inning. After drawing a two-out walk, Woodard scored on an RBI-double by Tittle. In the top of the second, Shollenberger led off the frame with a double before pinch runner Madison scored from third on a fielder choice to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
Ray started the three-run fourth inning with her second homer of the day. The blast to right center put UNA ahead 3-0. Amy Carden also doubled in the frame and reached third base before stealing home. Wright also singled, stole second and scored on an error to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
 
Two more runs in the top of the seventh inning capped the scoring for North Alabama. Following a solo home run by Sydney Sanders, Tittle doubled before scoring on an RBI-ground out by Shollenberger.
 
Tittle finished the second game 4-for-4 at the plate. Sanders was 2-for-4 while four other UNA players had one hit each.
 
The two teams will wrap up the GSC series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
