LIONS TAKE SERIES WITH 8-3 WIN OVER WEST FLORIDA

PENSACOLA, Fla., – Bailey Nelson was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Hillary Carpenter came on in relief to record her eighth win of the season as the University of North Alabama softball team defeated host West Florida 8-3 Sunday to clinch the Gulf South Conference series. With the win, UNA improves to 16-7 overall and 6-3 in GSC play.

Nursing a 3-2 lead, the Lions were able to break the game open with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. A single up the middle by Mackenzie Roberts started the inning. After two consecutive bunt singles by Hannah Shollenberger and Nelson loaded the bases, Sabrina Gilliam's double to left field scored three runs. Gilliam reached third before scoring on Reagan Tittle's RBI single to give UNA a 7-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Amy Carden was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. She was sacrificed to second before scoring on Shollenberger's double down the right line. The Argonauts added a run in the bottom of the seventh but could get no closer.

Carpenter (8-3) pitched the final 5.2 innings to get the win. She surrendered an earned run off four hits with five strikeouts. Hannah Bodenhorn started the game in the circle.

North Alabama was able to strike first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. After drawing a lead-off walk, Nelson reached second before scoring on Tittle's two-out RBI-single down the left line. Tittle then stole second base and scored on a single by Marissa Hancock.

Roberts led off the second with a double and later scored on an RBI-single by Bailey. The Lions loaded the bases with one out before UWF made a pitching change and got out of the inning without further damage. The Argonauts responded with single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to close the gap to 3-2. Neither team scored again until UNA's four-run sixth inning.

Roberts and Shollenberger also each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lions.

UNA will return home for its next two GSC series. The Lions will host Lee in a double-header beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11. The two teams will then play a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
