UNA MEN, WOMEN POST 9-0 WINS OVER BETHEL

MCKENZIE, Tenn., – A pair of dominating performances by the University of North Alabama men's and women's tennis teams highlighted a sweep over Bethel University on Sunday. Both UNA teams posted 9-0 victories to finish the non-conference weekend tilt with 2-0 marks.

The women's team won against a shorthanded Bethel team to improve to 9-5 on the season. The Lions won two doubles matches and five singles contests. The other two points were awarded to UNA when the Wildcats did not have enough players to fill each position.

In doubles play, an 8-1 victory at the top spot gave North Alabama and early 1-0 lead. Claire DeGeorge and Alie Gean then teamed together for the first time this season to produce an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. The default win at No. 3 gave the Lions a 3-0 lead.

UNA raced out to early leads and controlled all five singles matches to complete the sweep. A 6-0, 6-0 win by Nina Linke at No. 2 singles gave the freshman a 12-2 record on the season.

The UNA men were equally impressive, winning the three doubles matches and all six singles contests in straight sets to improve to 10-4 and reach a double-digit win total for the third consecutive season.

A pair of 8-1 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 set the stage for a 9-7 win at the top doubles spot to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. Just like the women's team, the UNA men posted straight-sets wins in every singles match to secure the sweep.

George Markos (No. 5) and Taylor Ausbon (No. 6) each posted 6-0, 6-0 showings to highlight singles play for the Lions.

Both UNA tennis teams are set to close the regular season with three straight Gulf South Conference road matches, beginning with a Wednesday afternoon showdown against UAH. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the Point Mallard Tennis Center in Decatur.
