SOFTBALL DOWNS UNION, AUM AT GSC FESTIVAL

MONTGOMERY – A pair of wins on the final day of the Gulf South Conference Opening Weekend Festival left the North Alabama softball team as the only unbeaten team at the event. The Lions knocked off Union 5-0 and Auburn-Montgomery 5-1 Sunday at Lagoon Park to improve to 10-2 on the year. With a 3-0 GSC record UNA also takes over sole possession of first place in the league standings.

Against Union, Brittany Ledbetter worked 6.1 strong innings in the circle to get the shutout victory. The junior from Vance struck out eight batters and scattered three hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Offensively, the Lions plated two runs each in the top of the first and second innings before adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Shelby Woodard gave UNA the early lead with an RBI-single in the top of the first inning. Woodard then scored from first base when Reagan Tittle doubled to left center.

In the second inning, the Lions loaded the bases before an infield single by Bailey Nelson scored Alex Brown from third. Kara Brewer then drove in Madison Daniel to give North Alabama a 4-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh when UNA put together a two-out rally. Follownig a pinch-hit single by Katie Eakes, pinch-runner Cindra Graves moved to second when Woodard drew a walk. Graves then scored on Tittle's single to center field.

Nelson and Tittle each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the opener.

The game against AUM featured the final two undefeated teams at the festival. UNA again used a fast start as well as solid pitching to run its winning streak to eight straight games.

Hannah Shollenberger got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homerun to left field. After the Warhawks added a single run in the top of the second, the Lions took advantage of a pair of AUM errors in the bottom of the frame to score two unearned runs.

The final run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nelson drew a walk and stole second before scoring on Woodard's two-out single to center field.

Megan Garst got the win in the circle. The sophomore from Columbiana allowed one run off three hits in six innings. She also struck out five to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Woodard and Alex Brown each went 2-for-3 in the second game.

UNA will now turn its attention to its home opener next weekend. The Lions will host No. 3 West Florida in a three-game GSC series. The two teams will play a double-header beginning Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at noon on Sunday.
