WESTFALL’S HOME RUN GIVES LIONS 18TH STRAIGHT WIN

FLORENCE – Veronica Westfall hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the University of North Alabama softball team to a 4-3 victory over Shorter on Saturday. The shot to left field capped a four-run rally over the final two innings for the Lions and extended the team's winning streak to 18 consecutive games to match a school record.

UNA is now 20-2 overall and 11-0 in Gulf South Conference play following a three-game sweep over the Hawks.

Shorter led 3-0 after scoring twice in the top of the second inning and again in the third. The Hawks hit two home runs and added an RBI-single to chase UNA starting pitcher Brittany Ledbetter from the circle. Megan Garst came on in relief with two outs in the top of the third inning to get the win. She retired all 13 batters she faced to improve to 8-1 on the year.

North Alabama was able to get base runners throughout the game, but could not score until the bottom of the sixth inning. Meleah Hargett led off the frame with an infield single and reached third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Alex Brown.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lions used three straight hits to get the win. Reagan Tittle started the rally with a hit to left field. Shelby Woodard followed with an infield single to bring Westfall to the plate. The sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn., then connected on her third homer of the season and second in as many days.

Hargett finished the day 2-for-2 at the plate. Woodard was 2-for-3.

UNA will hit the road for its next GSC series. The Lions will play three games at Montevallo over the weekend, beginning with a double-header at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams are also schedule to play a single game at 1:30 p.m. the following day.
