LIONS TENNIS TOP LADY STATESMEN 8-1

CLEVELAND, Miss., - A second straight Gulf South Conference road win has given the University of North Alabama women's tennis team a 5-4 overall record and 4-2 mark in league action. The Lions defeated Delta State 8-1 on Sunday for their fourth win in the last five matches.

After winning two of the three doubles matches, UNA quickly swept all six contests in singles play to secure the win. North Alabama will continue its GSC road swing on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. matchup at Christian Brothers.

On Sunday, UNA quickly took control as Nina Linke and Nele Seitz once again provided an early spark. The German duo produced an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Donna Haycock and Claudia Arroyo then increased the lead with an 8-2 win at No. 1 before the Lady Statesman were able narrow the lead to 2-1 after a win at No. 3 doubles.

Arroyo played solid in windy conditions to win 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to increase the UNA lead to 3-1. Linke then made it 4-1, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, and Claire DeGeorge clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.

Seitz (No. 4) won 6-3, 6-2 before Elise Sickle (No. 6) won 6-2, 6-1 to give UNA a 7-1 advantage. Haycock needed a little extra work before winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to wrap up the scoring.

"This was a big conference win," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "Anytime you can go on the road and win is good."
