LIONS DOWN MONTEVALLO 7-2 TO COMPLETE SWEEP

MONTEVALLO – Kara Brewer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Megan Garst pitched four shutout innings in relief as the University of North Alabama softball team completed a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep over Montevallo with a 7-2 victory on Sunday. With the win, UNA moves to 23-2 on the season, with a 14-0 GSC record. The Lions also extend their school-record winning streak to 21 straight games.

As was the case in the first two games of the series, the Lions used late runs to pull away. Harley Stokes gave UNA the early lead with a two-run home run. After Montevallo plated single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to tie the game, North Alabama responded with five straight runs.

Before the Lions could answer at the plate, Garst had to work out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth. The sophomore from Columbia entered the 2-2 game with the bases loaded and no outs. She quickly recorded a strikeout, a pop up and a line out to end the threat.

In the top of the fifth, the Lions used a two-out rally to regain the lead. Back-to-back doubles by Bailey Nelson and Brewer gave UNA a 3-2 lead. Madison Daniel scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. Stokes followed with a sacrifice fly to score Veronica Westfall from third base.

North Alabama wrapped up the scoring in the seventh inning. Meleah Hargett led off the frame with a single and later scored on a squeeze bunt by Alex Brown. Nelson also singled and scored in the inning. She finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

Garst retired 12 of 13 batters faced. She hit one batter but did not allow a hit or a walk to improve to 10-1 on the season.

UNA will host Mississippi College next weekend in a three-game GSC series. The two teams are scheduled to play a double-header beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday followed by a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
