UNA WOMEN KNOCK OFF AUM 5-4

MONTGOMERY – A second straight win by the University of North Alabama women's tennis team has evened the Lions' record at 3-3 on the season. UNA defeated Auburn-Montgomery 5-4 on the road on Friday to improve to 2-1 in Gulf South Conference play.

The Lions jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in doubles play. The German duo of Nele Seitz and Nina Linke wasted little time, winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Donna Haycock and Claudia Arroyo increased the lead with an 8-4 victory at the top spot before AUM was able to cut into the lead by winning 8-5 at No. 3.

With the Lions leading 2-1, Haycock raced out to a commanding 5-0 lead at No. 3 singles before her opponent was forced to retire. Arroyo then increased the lead to 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the top singles position.

With the remaining matches being tightly contested, Linke held off her opponent for a 6-1, 7-5 clinching win at No. 2 singles.

"That was big for Nina," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "She didn't play well down here last week and really wanted to make up for that. I would say she did."

AUM was able to win the three remaining matches to finish the scoring.

"This just shows you how good the women can be when they put it together," added Bishop. "I thought we left some points on the courts today. We will need to play more complete to beat Mississippi College on Sunday."

UNA will host Mississippi College on Sunday. Match time is set for 10 a.m. at the UNA Tennis Complex.
