LIONS CLOSE SEASON WITH 2-1 LOSS TO SAINT LEO

FLORENCE – Saint Leo plated single runs in the first two innings and held on for a 2-1 victory over North Alabama Saturday to advance to the 2018 NCAA Division II South Super Regional. With the loss, UNA ends its season with a 46-7 record.

The Lions were able to answer with a run in the bottom of the third, but left nine runners on base, including the tying run at second when the game ended.

Three different Saint Leo pitchers combined to hold UNA to a single run off six hits. Alison Mitts (13-8) came on in relief to get the win, while Sara Neuman recorded her second save of the season.

Saint Leo loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning before UNA starter Laken Distefano pitched out of a jam with only one run. After a leadoff walk and a single, SLU had three straight batters reach base on fielder's choice ground balls. The second scored the game's first run.

In the top of the second, Saint Leo got a leadoff double before scoring on consecutive North Alabama fielding errors to take a 2-0 lead. Distefano (16-3) finished her outing with two runs off three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Megan Garst pitched the rest of the way, working five innings without yielding a hit. She added five strikeouts to finish with 176 on the year.

North Alabama got its run in the bottom of the third with back-to-back two-out hits. Bailey Nelson doubled and reached third on a wild pitch before scoring on Kara Brewer's single to left field. The Lions got a runner in scoring position in each of the last four innings, but could not score.

Nelson finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Four other players had one hit each, including Reagan Tittle, who started for her 224th consecutive game to tie a school record. She ties Harley Barkley (2013-16) for the most starts in school history.
