UNA HAS FOUR ON GSC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS

BIRMINGHAM - The University of North Alabama had four student-athletes named to the 2018 Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Team and placed 53 total athletes on the GSC Academic Honor Roll.

Bailey Nelson and Reagan Tittle represented the UNA softball team, while Kyle Hubbuch (baseball) and Miguel Garcia (men's tennis) were also recognized.

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

Nelson, a senior from Florence, takes home Academic All-GSC honors for the first time in her career. The outfielder was a four-year letterman for the Lion softball team. She has a 3.61 GPA in elementary education and was also a second-team All-GSC pick on the field.

Tittle also lettered for four years, staring every game at shortstop for the Lions. The senior from Lynn has a 3.54 GPA in exercise science and received first team all-conference and all-region honors before garnering an All-America honorable mention by D2CCA.

Hubbuch, a senior from Mount Juliet, Tenn., has a 3.46 GPA in secondary education and history. He adds the academic award to his first team All-GSC and All-South Region honors this season. He also received an All-America honorable mention by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Senior Miguel Garcia was selected Academic All-GSC in men's tennis with a 3.52 GPA in professional marketing and sales. The Tenerife, Spain, native also earned multiple awards for athletic and academic accomplishments. He earned second team All-GSC honors for the third straight season and ended the regular season ranked No. 48 in the ITA rankings.

The Lions' 53 honor roll selections included 19 from baseball, 16 from softball, seven from women's tennis, six from golf and five from men's tennis. To be eligible for the academic honor roll, a student-athlete most have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
