LIONS COME UP SHORT AT SAMFORD

Box Score BIRMINGHAM – Samford grabbed an early lead in doubles play before getting six straight singles wins to record a 7-0 home victory over the University of North Alabama men's tennis team on Sunday. With the loss, UNA falls to 0-4 on the season while Samford improves to 2-2 on the year.
 
The Bulldogs rallied to win the doubles point. UNA's Jason Pimenta and Andreas Hansen gave the Lions the early lead with a 6-2 victory at the top spot. After Samford evened the score with a win at No. 3 doubles, North Alabama's Oscar Meslin and Tim Helson came up just short 6-4 at No. 2.
 
Samford won all six singles matches in straight sets, clinching the overall win at No. 5 singles. Heslin gave UNA the best opportunity to score. The sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the No. 6 position.
 
UNA will continue its eight-match, season-opening road swing on Feb. 1 at Chattanooga. Match time is set for 6 p.m. (Eastern) on the UTC campus.
