STRONG DOUBLES PLAY PACES MEN’S TENNIS AT ASPU HIDDEN DUEL

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team posted 12 victories in 17 matches over the weekend at the ASPU Hidden Duel at the Governors Tennis Center on the campus of Austin Peay. The Lions shined in doubles play, posting a 6-0 record against Cumberland and host ASPU.
 
"It was good to get out and compete this weekend," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "I liked our energy both days. You could tell these guys were hungry."
 
UNA started play on Saturday by winning five of six singles matches against Cumberland. Newcomers Cian Maguire (6-3, 6-4) and Yannick Pfeiderer (6-2, 6-0) got their first wins for the Lions. Maguire, a sophomore from Waterford, Ireland notched a 6-3, 6-4 win while Pfeiderer recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
 
North Alabama also added straight sets victories by Andreas Hansen (6-1, 6-0), Tim Helsin (6-2, 7-5) and Cade Reasons (6-2, 6-4).
 
In doubles play, UNA continued its strong start by sweeping three matches from the host Governors. Maguire teamed up with Hansen to post a 6-3 victory. Gustavo Girao paired with Pfeiderer for a 6-3 win. Heslin and George Markos completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory for the Lions.
 
 
On Sunday, UNA was able to rebound after a slow start after Austin Peay won four of five singles matches. Markos gave the Lions their only victory early in the day with a 6-3, 6-2 singles win.
 
After the break, the Lions returned to dominant form in doubles play, posting three straight wins over Cumberland. Maguire and Pfeiderer recorded a 6-3 win while Reasons and Heslin won 6-2 and Markos and Hansen won 6-1.
 
"These guys brought positive energy the whole weekend," added Bishop. "This was good work for the team. Everyone showed signs of improvement from last year and it was good to see the two new guys get after it."
 
The UNA men will return to action on Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Chattanooga Fall Tournament.
