WOMEN’S TENNIS RALLIES FOR 4-3 WIN AT JAX STATE

JACKSONVILLE – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team overcame a 3-1 deficit to rally for a 4-3 victory at Jacksonville State Wednesday afternoon on the road. The win over the previously-unbeaten Gamecocks gives UNA a 3-5 record on the season.

The Lions faced the 3-1 deficit after losing the doubles point and dropping singles matches at the No. 6 and No. 4 spots. Freshman Sydney Flesch gave UNA its first point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Nele Seitz then got the Lions within a point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 5 position.

With the Lions trailing 3-2, a pair of wins at the top of the lineup completed the comeback. Claudia Arroyo rallied to win her match at No. 1 before Payton Andrews clinched the match at No. 2. Arroyo trailed 3-0 in both sets before pulling out a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Moments later, Andrews clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-1 win.

"I'm so proud of this team," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "They never gave up and found a way to get another win.  Even though we trailed 3-1, I liked how we were playing on the three remaining courts. Claudia had the match of the day.  She trailed in both sets but continued to battle."

Jacksonville State (6-1) won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Flesch and Seitz posted a 7-6 posted a win at No. 3 doubles. The duo trailed 5-2 before rallying.

"There is no question I was a little disappointed with our doubles," Bishop added. "I just didn't see the energy we needed to beat a very good team. The win at No. 3 doubles did give us a little energy and confidence going in to singles."

The UNA women will play at Middle Tennessee on Saturday, March 2. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the MTSU campus in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
