WOMEN’S TENNIS GETS FIRST DIVISION I WIN

HUNTSVILLE – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team swept doubles play before winning five of the six singles match to pick up a 6-1 victory over Alabama A&M Sunday at the Athletic Club of Alabama to record the program's first-ever win at the Division I level.

After opening the season with a pair of losses 20 days ago at Tennessee, UNA is now 1-2 on the year.

"We felt the doubles point was going to be important for us, and I thought we came out strong," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "I wasn't sure how sharp we were going to be coming off a three week break from our last match, so getting the doubles point was big."

UNA took control early with senior Nele Seitz and junior Nina Linke cruising to a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. The freshman duo of Payton Andrews and Huntsville native Sydney Flesch then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Claudia Arroyo and freshman Megan Humphreys came up with the break they needed down the stretch in a close match. With the scored tied at 4-4, Humphreys served out the match for a 6-4 win.

With the Lions leading 1-0 overall, Humphreys quickly increased the lead with a 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Seitz made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

With UNA needing one more point to clinch the match, Flesch came up big at Court No. 3. Playing in her home club, she posted a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory to give the Lions their first win of the season.

"Sydney played at a very high level today," added Bishop. "I thought she might be a little nervous playing in front of so many family and friends, but she just went to work. Meg and Nele started fast and kept the momentum on our side. It was also good to see Nele play since she missed all of the fall season with an injury. "

Linke picked up another point for the Lions coming back from a huge deficit to win at No. 2 singles, 0-6, 6-3, 10-6. The Bulldogs got their only point with another three-set match at No. 1 singles. Andrews finished off the scoring winning 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.

"I'm really proud of these young ladies," said Bishop. "They came out after a long break and didn't miss a beat. Alabama A&M is a really good team. Hats off to Coach Mbandi. He has a very talented team and they were locked in."

UNA plays at Alabama State on Feb. 10. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in Montgomery.
