MEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS AUSTIN PEAY 5-2

FLORENCE – After dropping two of three doubles matches for an early 1-0 deficit, the University of North Alabama men's tennis team dominated singles play for a 5-2 home victory over Austin Peay on Tuesday. With the win, UNA improves to 2-12 on the season.

The Governors took the early lead with doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions. UNA's George Markos and Tim Heslin were able to claim a 6-4 victory at No. 3 after the overall point was decided.

In singles play, the Lions quickly regained momentum. Cade Reasons tied the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot. Oscar Meslin then gave UNA a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles. Jason Pimenta's 6-4, 6-4 win at the top spot put North Alabama within a point of victory and Gustavo
Girao clinched the match by rallying for a win.

After falling 6-2 in the opening set, Girao came back with 6-1 and 6-2 wins to secure the match for North Alabama. Austin Peay (5-11) picked up another point at No. 6 singles before Hansen completed another three-set comeback with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 4 position.

"I'm very proud of these guys and this win today," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "These guys have battled adversity all spring and they were able to overcome it today.

"After dropping the first set, this might have been Gustavo's best match as a Lion. Jason found himself in the same situation as last week, except this time, he was able to finish the match. That was big. Ocsar continues to play at a high level. Andy was good in the clutch today. I liked the way we finished strong."

UNA returns to ASUN Conference play over the weekend at Kennesaw State. The Lions will play Saturday at 1 p.m. on the KSU campus.
