FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team recorded the program's first win in ASUN Conference play on Saturday, downing NJIT 5-2 in the final home match of the season. With the win, the Lions move to 3-14 on the season and are still in contention for a berth in the upcoming ASUN Tournament with a 1-4 league mark. UNA closes out the regular season with road trips to Stetson and North Florida.
Against the Highlanders, UNA battled back from an early deficit to win the doubles point. After the Lions lost at the No. 2 position, Jason Pimenta and Gustavo Girao rallied for a 6-3 win at the top spot to tie the match.
At No. 3 doubles, Tim Heslin and George Markos let a late lead slip away before holding on for a 7-6 victory to secure the early lead.
In singles play, Pimenta quickly helped UNA increase its lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. NJIT would get on the scoreboard with a win at No. 3 singles before the Lions answered.
Markos opened play at No. 6 with a 6-2 win, then rallied for a 6-4 victory and give North Alabama a 3-1 overall lead. Needing a single point to secure the win, Cade Reasons clinched the match for the Lions with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. Shortly after, Andreas Hansen wrapped up the scoring for UNA with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position. NJIT won the final point of the day at No. 2 singles.
"I'm so proud of these guys," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "They have battled all season and to come up with this win today speaks to their character of how hard they have worked. Jason was phenomenal today. He played like you hoped a senior would on Senior Day. It was definitely his best overall outing this spring."
UNA will play at Stetson on April 11.
