UNA WOMEN EDGE NJIT 4-3 FOR FIRST ASUN VICTORY

FLORENCE – After winning the doubles point, the University of North Alabama women's tennis team held off NJIT for a 4-3 home victory on Saturday, earning the program's first-ever win in ASUN Conference play. The win on the final home match of the 2019 season gives the Lions a 6-14 record on the season with 1-4 mark in conference matches.

Nina Linke and Megan Humphreys took control early in a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Nele Seitz and Sydney Flesch also raced out to a big lead before winning 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to give UNA the early lead.
In singles play, a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 by Claudia Arroyo pushed the UNA lead to 2-0 before NJIT rallied.

The Highlanders tied the score at 2-2 with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 before North Alabama answered. After falling 6-0 in the opening set at No. 4 singles, Linke rallied to give the Lions the lead again. Her 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory made the score 3-2.

NJIT would again even the score at 3-3 with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles. That set the stage for senior Nele Seitz to clinch the match at the No. 5 position. After winning the opening set 7-5, she had to rally in the second set, winning 7-5, with an 8-6 decision in the tiebreaker.

"Nele was awesome down the stretch," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "Down 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set, she trusted her game, and it was definitely good enough. We played our best doubles of the year. I am also so proud of Claudia. She has battled injuries all season and to come up with a win today is only fitting. Nina has also played her best tennis of the year in the last three matches."

UNA will play at Stetson on April 11. A win over the Hatters would clinch a spot in the upcoming ASUN Tournament.
