MEN’S TENNIS TOPS USC-UPSTATE 4-3 FOR FIRST WIN

TROY, Ala., – Less than 24 hours after playing host Troy, the University of North Alabama men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season by outlasting USC-Upstate 4-3 in a neutral-site match Saturday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. A three-set victory in the final match at No. 1 singles clinched the match for the Lions, who improve to 1-8 on the season.

With the match deadlocked at 3-3, UNA's Cian Maguire overcame an early tiebreaking loss to post back-to-back wins at the top spot. The sophomore from Waterford, Ireland, raced out to a 5-1 lead in the final set before holding on for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 win.

"Cian played very physical in the second and third sets," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "That's what he has to do to be successful. We challenged the guys to come out with more energy.  We've been waiting for things to happen instead of making things happen ourselves."

UNA made an early statement in doubles play. Cade Reasons and Yannick Pfleiderer raced out to a commanding lead and won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. At the No. 1 spot, Maguire and Andreas Hansen held serve until a crucial break at 4-3, then served out the match to secure the doubles point for the Lions with a 6-3 win.

Reasons quickly increased the overall lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles. An Upstate win at No. 6 cut the deficit to 2-1 before Pfleiderer again increased the Lions' lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
Upstate was able to tie the match at 3-3 with victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles spots to set up the showdown at the top position.
"We thought the match could come down to the doubles point so I was pleased with how we handled the pressure throughout the match," added Bishop.

Both UNA tennis teams will be back in action at home on Wednesday against Jacksonville State. The women will begin with singles play at 11:30 am followed by men and women doubles and men's singles.
