LION TOP MURRAY STATE TO FINISH STINGER CLASSIC UNBEATEN

MONTGOMERY – A 6-0 win over Murray State on the final day of the ASU Stinger Classic gave the University of North Alabama softball team an undefeated record at the event. The fourth straight victory also gives UNA a 9-4 overall record on the season.

It was the second straight shutout win over the Racers, who were picked to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference and entered the series against UNA with a 10-2 record. On Sunday, Maci Birdyshaw tossed the complete-game shutout.

The freshman from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., took a no-hit bid into the bottom of the sixth inning. Murray State led off the frame with a pair of infield singles before Birdyshaw (3-0) retired the side with three straight fly balls. She finished the game with no runs off two hits and a strikeout.

North Alabama broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the sixth. Meleah Hargett and Harley Stokes each reached base on consecutive Murray State errors to start the inning. A ground ball by Hannah Shollenberger scored Hargett from third to score the first run of the game. UNA then increased its lead to 3-0 on a two-run double by Danielle de Ruiter.

In the top of the seventh, the Lions extended their lead. Lexie Harper led off the frame with a single and later scored on an RBI-single down the right line by Hargett. Stokes then doubled home Hargett to make the score 5-0 and chase the Murray State starting pitcher from the circle.

Stokes made it to third with one out before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Emma Latham.

For the game, the Lions had nine hits, with Harper, Shollenberger and de Ruiter all going 2-for-4 at the plate.

UNA will play at Ole Miss on Wednesday. First pitcher is set for 6 p.m. in Oxford, Miss.
