SOFTBALL WINS TWICE TO IMPROVE TO 4-0

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team got a mercy-rule victory in the first game and an extra-inning win in the second on Sunday to close out play at the UNA Invitational. The Lions defeated Alcorn State 8-0 in five innings before posting a 3-2 win over Tennessee State in the eighth inning of the nightcap to improve to 4-0 on the season.
 
Against Tennessee State, an RBI-ground out by Taylor Brown scored Harlie Stokes from third base for the winning run. Stokes, who was placed on second at the beginning of the frame via the international tie-breaker rule, reached third on a wild pitch before scoring the winning run. Brown was thrown out on the grounder, but the relay to home was not in time.
 
UNA held an early 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. An RBI-single by Brown scored Meleah Hargett from second base to give the Lions the early 1-0 advantage.
 
Madison Daniel led off the bottom of the second with a hit and later scored on Lexie Harper's single up the middle to give North Alabama a two-run lead.
 
UNA struggled to find offense the rest of the game as Tennessee State pitcher Lauren Powell settled in. The Lions  got baserunners in four of the next five innings without scoring before breaking through in the eighth.
 
The Tigers tied the game with a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning. Sidney Revels started and pitched the first 3.2 innings. Michelle Moore faced the last batter in the fourth inning and pitched the entire fifth inning for the Lions. Megan Garst (2-0) pitched the final three frames to get the win. She struck out four and did not allow a hit or a walk.
 
Each team has six hits. Harper led the way with a 2-for-4 showing with an RBI. Brown also drove in two runs.
 
In the early game, UNA recorded its third straight mercy-rule victory. The Lions plated one run in the bottom of the first inning, three in the second and four in the fifth to get the win. Maci Birdyshaw pitched a one-hit shutout to get the win in the circle. The freshman from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., struck out eight in her collegiate debut.
 
Brown opened the scoring with a single through the left side to score Harper from third. In the bottom of the second inning, UNA got an RBI-double by Georgia Land and a sacrifice fly by Harper. The Lions also scored on an error to take a 4-0 lead.
 
The four-run fifth inning ended the game via the mercy rule. UNA took advantage of a pair of TSU errors to score a pair of unearned runs. Harper then ended the game with a two-run double to right center.
 
Harper was 2-for-2 with three RBI. She finished the day with four hits, four RBI and a run scored. Daniel also went 2-for-3 in the opener.
 
North Alabama will head to Starkville, Miss., next weekend to play in the Mississippi State Bulldog Kickoff Classic. The Lions will face Tennessee State, Mississippi State and Tulsa in pool play Friday and Saturday before starting bracket play on Sunday.
