SOFTBALL LIONS GO 3-0 IN NEW ORLEANS

NEW ORLEANS, La., – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up three wins over two SWAC teams over the weekend in New Orleans. The Lions got 8-0 and 6-3 victories over Grambling State sandwiched around a 6-0 win over Prairie View A&M to improve to 15-7 on the season.

In the opener against Grambling, UNA got eight runs off seven hits and Sidney Revels pitched a two-hit shutout in five innings.

The Lions started fast with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a single run in the bottom of the second, a three-run fourth inning set the stage for the mercy-rule victory.

Katie Eakes was 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI. Five other UNA players had one hit each. Revels struck out six in five innings to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The 6-0 win over Prairie View A&M wrapped up play on Saturday. The Lions broke open a scoreless game with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. A five-run sixth inning later sealed the win.

Lexie Harper led off the fourth with a triple and later scored on Meleah Hargett's single through the right side.

In the bottom of the sixth, UNA sent 10 batters to the plate. The Lions scored five runs off four hits, highlighted by a two run-double by Hargett. Emma Latham and Taylor Brown also drove in runs and the Lions also scored on an error in the frame.

Megan Garst tossed her fourth shutout of the season to improve to 6-4 on the year. She allowed two hits and struck out 11 batters. Harper and Hargett each finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.

North Alabama picked up its second win over Grambling with a 6-3 victory on Sunday. The Lions took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before holding off a late rally by the Tigers.

UNA scored twice in the top of the first inning to grab the early lead. After a single run in the second increased the lead to 3-0, a three-run seventh inning proved to be the difference in the game.

Georgia Land was 2-for-3 for the Lions. Danielle de Ruiter also went 2-for-4, including a two-run double in the top of the seventh. Latham also finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
